Program Highlights

FLEXIBLE ONLINE FORMAT

The online MA in Education is intentionally designed for working educators and creative professionals. Courses are offered in accelerated eight-week e-terms, with five e-terms available each year across Fall, Spring, and Summer. You can complete the 30-credit degree in as little as 10–18 months, depending on your pace.

Because courses are fully online and asynchronous, you complete readings, discussions, and assignments on your own schedule, with no required login times. Small class sizes ensure that, even at a distance, you receive personalized feedback and guidance from faculty and peers.

CORE LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a student in the MAEd program, you build a toolkit that connects creative practice, educational theory, and community leadership. By graduation, you will be able to:

  • Design student-centered, inclusive learning environments that respond to varied abilities, backgrounds, and identities, with a focus on equity and access.
  • Integrate contemporary art and social issues into the curriculum, helping learners think critically about the world around them.
  • Embed social-emotional learning (SEL) into art and education settings to support emotional intelligence, empathy, and resilience.
  • Lead and advocate for the arts in schools, organizations, and communities using research-informed leadership and communication strategies.
  • Develop and implement community-based art projects that foster connection, civic engagement, and a sense of belonging.

These outcomes guide both your coursework and your capstone experience, ensuring that what you learn can be applied immediately in your classroom, institution, or community.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

Your capstone lets you bring everything together (research, creative practice, and community engagement) in a culminating project tailored to your goals. You’ll choose one of the following 6-credit options:

  • Reflective Action Research (6 credits)
Investigate a question rooted in your own practice or workplace. You’ll design and carry out an arts-based research project, analyze your findings, and share how your work can inform future teaching, programming, or policy.
  • Artist as Educator (6 credits)
Develop a body of creative work that explores your role as an educator, artist, and leader. Through studio practice, documentation, and reflection, you’ll articulate how artmaking shapes your pedagogy and your impact on learners.
  • Community Action Project (6 credits)
Design and implement a project that addresses a real need in your community — for example, a public art initiative, youth program, museum education series, or cross-sector collaboration. You’ll plan the project, put it into action, and evaluate its outcomes.

Across all three options, you will work closely with faculty mentors and peers, gaining structured feedback as you build a portfolio-ready project that demonstrates your expertise.

COMMUNITY & PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT

Community is central to the MAEd experience. You’ll learn alongside a diverse cohort of educators, teaching artists, museum professionals, human services practitioners, and community organizers who are each using the arts to drive change in their own contexts.

Coursework often asks you to:

  • Connect assignments to your current workplace or community setting
  • Design projects that respond to local needs and opportunities
  • Reflect on your role in advancing equity, access, and inclusion through the arts

Maine College of Art & Design’s long-standing commitment to community partnerships and public engagement provides a strong foundation for this work, supporting students who want to collaborate with schools, museums, nonprofits, and other organizations in Portland and beyond.

LEARN FROM EXPERT FACULTY

Courses in the online MA in Education program are led by faculty and advanced practitioners who are active in the fields of art education, arts administration, expressive arts therapy, community organizing, and museum education.

You benefit from:

  • Faculty who are working artists and educators, bringing real-world projects, case studies, and challenges into the online classroom.
  • Instructors with deep experience in K–12 settings, higher education, museums, human services, and community-based arts organizations.
  • Personalized mentorship and feedback on your teaching strategies, creative work, and capstone project.

This combination of academic rigor and lived professional experience helps you translate theory into practice and build a network of mentors invested in your growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is an MA in Education the same as a teaching degree?

No. An MA in Education is a graduate-level degree that strengthens your skills in curriculum design, creative teaching, leadership, and community engagement. It’s designed for educators and professionals who want to deepen their practice or advance into new roles. A teaching degree or teacher certification program, on the other hand, prepares you specifically for state licensure.

2. Does this program lead to teaching certification?

No, this program does not lead to a teaching certification.

3. How strict is the policy regarding elective courses, and can I transfer in any I have taken outside of Maine College of Art & Design or courses I took as a non-degree student?

The program allows for flexibility in regard to course offerings. Students can request to transfer in a maximum of two graduate-level courses (6 credits) taken outside of Maine College of Art & Design, with the program director’s approval. Students must have earned at least a “B” in each course. These courses cannot have been used in obtaining another degree.

4. Are required courses offered every semester?

Yes, typically, one to two required courses are offered each e-term. This program has courses offered in five different e-terms. E-terms are different from the traditional Maine College of Art & Design academic calendar. The e-term schedule includes intensive eight-week courses. There are two e-terms in the Fall, two in the Spring, and one in the Summer. Each course is typically three credits and is an accelerated version of a typical 15-16 week semester course. In other words, the same amount of material is covered, but in a shorter time span. It is recommended that you work with your program director to determine the optimal number of courses per e-term for your specific circumstances.

5. Do I need to register for two courses each semester, or can I register for one course each semester?

Students are not required to register for each e-term, and many choose to register for one course each Fall and Spring semester. This means you can register for e-term 1 OR 2 in the Fall and e-term 3 OR 4 in the Spring.
